TV IS KING-FOR NOW!

As the orders for staying/working/learning/fill-in-the-blank from home continues, many people are getting aquatinted to hangin’ around the house. Not because they have nowhere to go or have nothing else to do, but just to keep safe!

When it comes to keeping sane, that’s a whole different matter! A lot of these same folks are doing their damnedest to keep their sanity in check, now that the spouse, kids, domestic partner, roommate, etc. are staying longer home than one would want them to be.

There are a lot of things to keep one’s self occupied. Outside of working from home a.k.a. WFH (again, not to be confused with “WTF”, although the two terms serve as strange bedfellows), there’s stuff like cleaning up the house and its surroundings. There’s creating fancy dishes that one previously never had the time, effort, or even nerve to conger up in their meager kitchens. There’s doing exercises one used to do at their neighborhood gym or in their report work out sessions. There’s the keeping up with family members, friends, co-workers, or anybody else one keep in touch with through phone, Face Time, Google Hangouts, and the poster child of them all, via Zoom. And of course if one is able, there’s the art of “getting busy” under the sheets! And it one is even kinky enough, there are other places within the homestead to try out for some serious rollin’ in the hay sessions! (Why not…?)

Perhaps one of the most popular and commonplace things to do is to watch TV. In this day and age, there are more choices for visual entertainment to choose from. And one isn’t limited to viewing something on the traditional TV set. One can view stuff on a laptop, an electronic pad device, or one’s phone.

It was no surprise when Netflix, the be-all-to-end-all place to screen content, reported that subscribership is up for the month of March vs.the previous month of February. Some 16 million subscribers were added for the first quarter for the year, although the company was expecting some seven million! Its hottest program right now is the true-crime documentary series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. Hulu also reported big gains in viewership as well. Although its audience is at its biggest between 7:00 to 10:00 PM local time, it’s daytime usage is up as well. Between 1:00 and 4:00 PM, streaming content is up as high as 87% compared to January and February. Since more people are working from home (assuming that they didn’t get their job cut), who says you can’t work while the TV machine is doing its thing by streaming Friends re-runs??

But TV, or to be precise, any electronic device that sports a video screen, is keeping those in check. Granted, now that the weather is getting better in many parts of the nation, one can actually go out and get some air. But why not take a walk around the ol’ neighborhood while keeping one eye straight ahead and the other eye on viewing content found on Qubi, that new service that offers programming that runs for ten minutes or less per episode!

In spite of TV’s “second coming” (one of many “second comings” the television industry has experienced over the last seventy years we may add), no one can say how long this upkeep in viewing will last. Only time, tide, and a cure to the virus of the year will settle this score. In the mean time, enjoy the content and programming, keep six feet away from everyone, wear that face mask, wash your hands, and stay and keep safe!
